Taming of the Shrew - Summer 2008

The Story

Never could the old Harry Enfield sketch "Women, know your place," have more relevance in Shakespeare than Taming of the Shrew, but, whereas those ladies were meek and mild, these women aren't going down without a fight. Gentlemen, it's time to dust of those old Cricket cups.

Welcome to Padua, Italy.
The eligable, yet mercenary, Petruchio has just arrived in town with his faithful, yet bruised, man-servant Grumio in order to live life to the full and find a wife with a fortune to her name.

At the same time Baptista Minola, a wealthy lady of Padua, has just crushed the hopes of the town's men by declaring that her young, beauteous daughter Bianca may not marry until her "shrewish" sister, Kate, finds a husband.
With Kate's legendary bad temper and propensity for handing out physical reminders of her displeasure, this puts the potential "Bianca suitors," at something of an impasse, an impasse which is further compounded by the arrival of the dashing Lucentio, who also has plans to find a wife.

Schemes are put into motion, marriage proposals are made and servants are generally kicked, beaten and abused in the best traditions of the theatre.
Forget about equality, it's time to throw political correctness out the window, so sit back and we hope you enjoy, first time director, Kevin Thorpe's production of one of Shakespeare's finest comedies; The Taming of the Shrew.
